Long Description:
An historical marker is fixed on a rock to mark the site where the Ojibway traded with other natives in the 1600’s. French-Canadian trader Michel Cadotte built his trading post in this same spot somewhere between 1790 and 1833. The marker reads:

Michel Cadotte. A French Canadian trader, built a post on this site about 1792. From his wife Madeline, daughter of the Chippewa chief White Crane, the island takes its present name.

The official French Fort LaPointe was built in 1718 about 500 feet west. Its commandants were St. Pierre, Linctot, La Ronde, Marin, and Beaubassin, the last of whom retired in 1759.
