Long Description:
In the last few kilometers of Maggia valley, not far from the confluence of Melezza and Maggia, the river Maggia has created a spectacular and picturesque gorge into the Gneissic rocks.
Deep and narrow rifts alternate with rounded basins and waterfalls. The gorge is only about one kilometer long, before and after the river flows in a wider, flat valley bottom. There are several possibilities to climb down to the gorge, but the easiest ones are near the bridge of Ponte Brolla or close to the abandoned railroad bridge near the upper end.
This gorge is a very popular tourist spot. Obviously for hikers and climbers, but many also love to swim in the basins, there are even some scuba diving spots and some of the rocks are popular for cliff divers with regular official competitions up to European championships.
The waymark location is on the terrace of the restaurant in the corner of the bridge, from where you have an easy first overview.
