Long Description:

Spacious Church of the Holy Spirit (Kostel Sv. Ducha), an integral part of the Opava Minorite convent, is interesting structure with early Gothic core and Baroque exterior. The Holy Spirit is a parish church of Roman catholic parish of the Holy Spirin in Opava.

The Church of the Holy Spirit, built around 1289, is originally Gothic, presumably two-aisled brick building with polygonal presbytery and slender tower. The church underwent several reconstructions in Gothic and Baroque period, the most important one in 1756 (after devastating fire). During this reshaping was church completely rebuilt into a single-nave structure with a number of side chapels and monumental late Baroque front facade. Also interior is Baroque - with frescoes of Ignác Günther and carved wooden altar of Karl Kraus. The church became a parish church in 1784. Intersting is presence of composer Ludwig van Beethoven during interpretation (regenschori Josef Schmidt) of his famous Mass c-moll (C-minor) in the Church in Septemer 28th, 1811.
