Polk County
First County Seat

The first county seat in Polk
County was situated a short dist-
ance south of the site of the
present town of Mena, at a place
called Dallas, in honor of George M.
Dallas, Vice-President of the United
States. The county was named for
President James K. Polk.

Arkansas History Commission

Located on the western edge of Arkansas, bordering Oklahoma, Polk County became the 48th county of the state in 1844. The original county seat was located near the southwest corner of Township 2 south, Range 30 west in the settlement of Dallas dating from the 1830's. In 1897 the people of the county voted to move the county seat to its present location in Mena. The marker is located in the center of Janssen Park in Mena.
