Long Description:
The corner stone for the the Dunedin library was placed by the Mayor of Dunedin G. Lawrence on February 13, 1907. The library opened December 2, 1908. The library was built using a £10,000 grant from American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. When the library opened it offered only reference services. Over the years the library expanded it services greatly. The building continued to serve as the Dunedin public library until 1981. The building now known as the Carnegie Centre has various art galleries and a restaurant.

The building is listed as Category II building on the New Zealand Heritage Trust Register.
