Long Description:
This measurement standard was originally used by the ‘Hoogheemraadschap van Rijnland.’ In the Dutch regions mainly the Rijnlandse measurement sizes were used for surveying and scientific purposes. The length was fixed by the distance between two notches at the entrance of the town hall in Leiden.
The ‘Rijnlandse roede’ was recorded on 18 February 1808 by the King of Holland as standard size for the Netherlands. The metric system was introduced In 1816.
Because of a fire in 1929, when the town hall was destroyed, this is a copy if the original one. The original one can be found in the museum Boerhaave in Leiden.
