Long Description:
This beautiful Victorian brick mansion sits at 2480 Columbia Avenue, in Rossland, at the corner of Columbia Avenue and Georgia Street. The view is from Columbia, looking northeast up the driveway. The house may have been as much as 10 or 12 years old when the picture was taken in 1910. It is now in private hands (lucky guys).

West Kootenay Power & Light was created to supply electricity for the new smelter in Trail (built about 1896), just 3 miles east and down the hill from Rossland. The smelter was built to process the gold, silver, copper, lead and zinc ore from the mines in Rossland. With three large rivers in the vicinity (the Columbia, the Pend d'Oreille and the Kootenay), hydro power was readily available and hydro dams were constructed, first on the Kootenay River, north at Castlegar, and later on the Pend d'Oreille River near the border south of Trail. WKP&L, naturally, also supplied electricity to the mines and the towns of the area.
Year photo was taken: 1910
