The River Bridge Abutments
A ferry and a covered bridge on wooden spiles accommmodated local and commercial traffic between Thamesvill and Howard/Orford Townships at this location in the 1860's. In 1874, stone masons James and Johnn Tinline from Kelso, Scotland were contracted by J.R. Ferguson to construct stome abutments to suppport theat wooden bridge. Assistants were John Farqueson and mudman John Yeoman. Materials included stone blocks from Scotland, mortar sand from Morpeth and horsehair. In 1887 and iron bridge replaced the wooden bridge using the same abutments. Georg Bain mounted the ironwork atop the north abutment in 1955.
