Long Description:
The church did not become a cathedral until 1919, but work started on the present building in 1458. The tower was added in 1508 and is 100 feet high and has walls eleven feet thick. The tower contains 12 bells, the heaviest of which weighs 2.5 tons.

On 25th August 1980 a visiting team of London bell ringers set a record with a length of 13,968 Spliced Surprise Maximus. I’ve no idea what this means, but if as I suspect the bells had to be rung consecutively 13,968 times, this impressive indeed. However the record was later broken in 1993 at a different location.

In 2011 the tower moved into the modern world with the installation of a computerised simulator. The simulator, known as a wombel, generates the sound of the bells through loudspeakers in the bell chamber. This allows the bell ringers to practice without upsetting the neighbours.
