Long Description:
The first teacher, Kate Jennings called roll and noted that 7 of the 10 new pupils shared the surname "Eggers".
The design of the school building was typical of hundreds of rural schools that once dotted the South Dakota countryside. There was no running water and heat was provided by a cast-iron coal burning stove positioned near the front of the room.
Enrollment at the Eggers School was generally small, the largest enrollment ever was 24 children. Each year one teacher taught all subjects to all students in grades 1 thru 8. In 48 years of existence 143 puplis were taught by 29 diffrent teachers. Often the teacher roomed and boarded with a family in the district.
In 1955 South Dakota required rural school districts to be attached to a 12 year school district. Two years later with only 4 pupils enrolled, Eggers school closed. Former pupil James Wehde bought the building and later donated it to Augustana college.
