Quick Description: In 1859 Henry Masters was the first person of Sioux Falls City to die. He was buried in an open field close to his home close to this historical marker.

Long Description:
The next deaths were those of the Judge Joseph B. Amidon and his son William. Mahala Amidon the widow of Joseph soon fled the area and went to Yankton because of the ambush of her husband and son by the Santee Sioux Indians.
In 1865 Federal Soldiers arrived to build Fort Dakota. The first military funeral was held for Fred Pues. Soon after a National Cemetery was established next to the city cemetery. There were 4 military and 5 civilian burials in the two cemeteries.
