Long Description:
In 1872 Baptist services were held sporadically as the number of Baptists was too small to form a congregation. Finally in 1875 with 11 charter members, Rev. Amos Hilton organized a Baptist congregation.

The first church was dedicated on November 1, 1882. Wallace L. Dow, premier architect of Dakota Territory and a member of the congregation designed the structure. The original church was a 55 x 49 ft. building with seating for 300 even though the congregation numbered only 25. Innovations included a warm water baptistry, making outdoor immersion baptism in the Big Sioux River a thing of the past.

In 1883 Evan Meredith was ordained as pastor. Meredith was a co-founder of the University of Sioux Falls.

Over the years the congregation grew and new churches were built to house the members.
