Brownhoist Locomotive Crane

Built by the Industrial Brownhoist Corporation for the U.S. Army in 1943.  It was transferred to the Alaska RR in 1947.  It was converted from coal to oil n 1958 and retired in 1980  The Crane was self-propelled, vaing a tender at the rear to carry fuel and water.  The unsual flat car in front of the crane is an "Idler car" and is used to carry the various pieces of rigging and slings for use by the crane.  The "bent" boom enables the crane to reach over a boxcar and lift the entire car so it can be set back on the tracks.
