According to information is signposted from the 1300s. Just north west of the chapel is a spring which in medieval times was considered sacred. Pilgrims travelled here to drink the healing water and to achieve healing through prayers and gifts. This practice, however, kept on until the Reformation and the chapel's importance ended at the same time as the boom in herring fishing.
