Long Description:
The City Hall and bell tower was originally built in 1873 as a town hall. At the time Bradford was a booming industrial town built on the wool trade. In order to reflect the importance of the town a new town hall was commissioned to rival the nearby towns of Leeds and Halifax.

The building was designed in the Venetian style and the tower was inspired by Palazzo Vecchio in Florence.

The clock was only added to the tower in 1937.

The tower is 220 feet high, has 13 bells which weigh in total 17 tons. The original cost of them was 5,000 GBP.

In 1992 it was discovered the frame of the bell had decayed severely and the bells fell out of use. However in 1997 Bradford managed to get funding from the National Lottery to repair the frame.

A later installation of a sophisticated computer control system means the bells can be programmed to play many tunes.

Apart from being used to mark time, the bells are used for a variety of purposes. Whenever a prominent Bradford Citizen dies such as a mayor, they are tolled for an hour to mark their death and again at the start of their funeral.

They were used to ring the USA National Anthem to mark 3 minutes silence for those who lost their lives in terrorist attacks.

In 2010 filming took place inside the city hall for the TV soap opera ‘Coronation Street’. To mark this the theme tune of the show was played on the bells.

When I was there on 29th December 2010 they were playing Christmas carols.
