Long Description:
Royal Town of Kourim is primarily known for its city's fortification system, which construction started in the 13th century. The Kourim fortification due to its uniqueness in 1995 became a Czech National Cultural Monument. The depicted Kolín bastion (Kolínská bašta), built around 1490, is one of the most important parts of the fortification system. From its height and massive walls you can imagine the real range of the Kourim fortification - the bastion was only pre-fortification line of the former Kolin gate...
The first mention of the city Kourim was linked with city walls that were already built in the middle of the 13th century, given as an example to other cities. In the later times here was a double line of the fortification with bastions, ditches and mounds - and also with four main gates - Prague, Kolín, Oleška and Malotice. Only one of the gates, the Prague Gate, survived to the present time. This gate, which has been the most important of all, is today one of the best preserved Gothic tower-gates of its kind in the Central Europe. For a better understanding of history leads along the wall educative trail "Medieval Fortification Kourim" with a set of information boards.
