Long Description:
This imposing structure was built during the boom period for Oamaru. The Bank of New South Wales building was typical of the era with the bank manager's residence on top, the financial transactions on the main, and, in the case, the servants in the basement.

Built by local architect Robert Lawson, this building has proved it worth of time. And while the Bank of New South Wales merged with another bank to from Westpac, the building was acquired by Waitaki District Council and is operated as the Forrester Gallery.
