Long Description:
Old Havana is like a phoenix rising from the ashes of the past five decades. The city, along with the country, has suffered under the strain of trade embargoes since Fidel Castro led the revolution in the late 1950s.
The old city was first founded in 1519 by the Spanish. By the 17th century, it had become one of the Caribbean's main centres for ship-building.
Although it is today a sprawling metropolis of 2 million inhabitants, its old centre retains an interesting mix of Baroque and neoclassical monuments, and a homogeneous ensemble of private houses with arcades, balconies, wrought-iron gates and internal courtyards. You can also find sections of the original fortification that surrounded the city in its infancy.
Investment and tourism, primarliy from Europe, is helping transform this city back to its former glory.
