Long Description:
For two consecutive Octobers I have tried to visit the scenic railway on the Peloponese. And two years i have returned home disappointed! In 2007 the massive fires that swept Greece made it impossible for the railway to run. This year there have been no fires but the train was still out of action. This year they have replaced the two carriages that have been used since the 1960's. But...someone got it wrong. The 12 Km journey through the Vouraikos gorge has some extremely tight turns where the foliage and rock come very close to the track. Unfortunatley the new carriages were wider and passage is not possible safely. So back to the drawing board for a while.
So we drove the winding road to Kalavryta.Passing a disused steam engine from the early 20th century. (No plaque)
In the station at Kalavryta there was one of the original engines from the 1890's and a bogey showing the pinion drive which is used on the steepest parts of the journey.
The track was laid between 1885 and 1895 by some clever Italian enineers.
Better luck next year...maybe
