Continental Reformed and Congregational Church Sites
Managed By: Icon Here Reform School
Description:
This is a category dedicated to locating Continental Reformed and Congregational Church buildings and historical sites associated with these denominations.
Expanded Description:
Wikipedia tells us that "The Protestant Reformation was the schism within Western Christianity initiated by Martin Luther, John Calvin, and other early Protestant Reformers. Although there had been significant attempts to reform the Roman Catholic Church before Luther, he is typically cited as the man who set the religious world aflame in 1517 with his The Ninety-Five Theses. Luther started by criticizing the selling of indulgences, insisting that the pope had no authority over purgatory and that the Catholic doctrine of the merits of the saints had no foundation in the gospel...

"The Reformation movement within Germany diversified almost immediately, and other reform impulses arose independently of Luther. The largest groupings were the Lutherans and Calvinists (or Reformed)...

This category seeks to contribute and develop the existing collection of categories documenting the development and diversity of traditions within the protestant denominations.

Continental Reformed and Congregational Churches make up two of the three groupings of Protestant Christian denominations developing out of the work of the reformers Ulrich Zwingli and John Calvin. The use of the term "Continental" Reformed is to distinguish these churches from Presbyterian or other Calvinistic churches which have their origin in the British Isles.

As a category already exists for Presbyterian Churches those locations will not be included here. (These are Churches tracing their history back to John Knox and 14th century Scotland.)

The qualifications for a site to be listed in this category are fairly precise so the posting instructions should be followed carefully in order to avoid any waymark being rejected.

REVIEWERS PLEASE NOTE : Waymarks which are declined must be justified in referring explicitly to some violation of the requirements given below. Revisions to these criteria will be made to resolve any ambiguous cases. When in doubt, please put the waymark up for a vote.

Also, keep in mind that descriptions may be completely written in the local language (Please use an on-line translator in this case to review the waymark.)

Instructions for Posting a Continental Reformed and Congregational Church Sites Waymark:

1). INCLUDED DENOMINATIONS: Only post a waymark here if it can be associated with a denomination included in either of the sites given below or on the list of exceptions given under point c) below :

  1. World Communion of Reformed Churches
  2. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Christian_denominations under the heading Calvinism but not under the sub-heading "Presbyterianism"
  3. Exceptional cases :
    • Církev bratrská (Church of the Brethren in the Czech Republic)

This would nevertheless also be excluding

a) Any Church with the word "Presbyterian" in the name or equivalent in local language

b) Any Church with the word "Scotland" in the name as these are also included in the Presbyterian denomination.

(If you find a denomination that you think should be included in the exceptions send a note to the category leaders with justifying arguments for consideration.)

2). QUALIFYING SITES: Historical sites associated with any one of these denominations may be included as long as the link between the historical significance and the denomination is clearly made in the Long Description.

Buildings that were once Churches of these denominations and that have been converted to another use may also be included as long as its history can be documented.

3). COORDINATES: Personally obtained coordinates must be obtained as close to the main entrance of the church building as possible. Coordinates should NOT be taken of a distant vantage point unless access is somehow restricted.

4). PHOTOS: At minimum one daylight photo is required showing the entire building/historical site or a major distinguishing portion thereof.

If no website exists which can clearly link the subject of the photo with a denomination included in the category, a second photo consisting of a clear close-up of a sign or identifying lettering is also required which unambiguously links the location to a denomination in this category.

Other photos showing different views and details of the site are highly encouraged. While we don't expect professional photography, waymarks submitted with underexposed, blurred, skewed or otherwise poor quality photos may be declined.

All photos must be the waymarker's original photos and be placed in the photo gallery for the waymark.

5). DESCRIPTIONS: Keep in mind that the quick description is what people see when browsing, so do your best to give a succinct description that will give people an "at a glance" overview of the waymark.

Bi-lingual descriptions of sites located in non-English speaking countries are encouraged in order to open the hobby to non-English speakers.

Further to this point, descriptions may be written completely in the local language.

In the long description, include any relevant information about the history, architecture, or other notable elements of the building or site.

6). VARIABLES: Please make a good faith effort to provide the information for the variables. Most are not required as they may not apply in all instances. It is required to specify the denomination of the church site in the variables section.

If a photo consisting of a clear close-up of a sign or identifying lettering is not included, a web site which can clearly link the subject of the one required photo with a denomination included in the category will also be required.

7). WAYMARK NAME: The waymark title must include the full name of the church followed by a dash and its associated community (city, township, village, named place, etc.) and the State, Province or country separated by a comma must be at the end of each waymark name using the following format. (Two letter state abbreviations are preferred for U.S. sites but please spell out country names). Example: Fourth Reformed Church - Chicago, IL

If the building is no longer an active church, or no longer a Reformed or Congregational Church, please include Former in the title.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
A complete sentence or two or an uploaded photo taken by the waymarker will be required in the log to confirm that the logger is participating in the hobby in good faith. Logs of only a few words like "Visited it" without an original photo are subject to deletion.
