Battle of Bukcheon 1592 - Sangju, Korea

Here on the north bank of the Bukcheon River in present town of Sangju, one of the early battles was fought with the invading Japanese who were ultimately repulsed in a decisive naval battle on the south coast.

Namdoseokseong (남도석성) - Jindo, Korea
This historic fortress probably dates from the 15th century built as a defense against Japanese pirates. It has been well preserved and encloses as living village with many of the old buildings and walls freely open to the public.
Windbreak Pine Tree Forest in Shongho-ri (Monument No. 142)
This stand of over 600 black pine trees is found along several kilometers of straight sand beach in thd small village of Songho, on the Haenam Peninsula, near the southernmost point on the Korean mainland.

This is an area on the island of Jindo where migrating swans gather in the winter.

Site of Home of Kim Okgyun - Gwangjeong-ri, Korea
Although there are no longer any buildings here, this site has been preserved out of historical interest for this revolutionist. Kim Okgyun who was born here, and was eventually assassinated while in route to Shanghai.

Daejeon Cultural Property 44 - Evangelist's Village (오정동 선교사촌) - Daejeon, Korea
This historic site, on the campus of Hannam University, preserves the original housing compound of Dr. William A. Linton and fellow missionaries who founded this school in 1956. They were built as western style houses with traditional Korean roofs.

National Treasure 288: Jeondong Catholic Church - Jeonju
Jeondong Catholic Church was built 1908-1914 by French Father Xavier Baudonet on the site of the first Korean martyrs in 1781, and the martyrdom of Bishop Yu Hang-gom in 1801. This Romanesque building Korea National Treasure No. 288

Historic Site 257: Unhyeongung - Seoul, Korea
Now surrounded by the great city of Seoul, Unhyeongung (small palace) was the home of young Gojong who later became Emperor in the Joseon Dynasty. Some parts of the palace grounds date from the 1300's with major additions in the 19th century.

Historic Site 258: Seoul Railroad Station - Seoul, Korea
Seoul Station was completed in 1925 by the occupying Japanese Imperial Forces, during the years of brutal oppression. Tsukamoto Yasushi also designed Tokyo Station, which this resembles. A new, modern station is adjacent, and this will be a museum.

National Treasure 2: Wongaksa Pagoda - Seoul
Wongaksa Pagoda is a fabulous ten-storied stone pagoda, was originally at Gyeongbokgung Palace, but now located in Seoul's Tapgol Park, enclosed in thick protective shielding. It dates from 1467 as one of the finest example of Joeson era pagoda art.

National Treasure 1: Sungnyemun - Seoul
Sungnyemun, officially, or Namdaemun commonly, is National Treasure 1. Built in 1398, it was one of three gates in Seoul's protective wall. On Feb. 10, 2008, the two-tiered wooden gate house was destroyed by arson, and is now under reconstruction.
