Religious Freedom
Managed By: Icon Here Witnesses
Description:
This is a place to identify and present places around the world commemorating the universal human struggle for religious freedom.
Expanded Description:

World history is replete with conflicts between people, people groups, nations, military forces and despots specifically because of religious beliefs, affiliations, and practices. Groups and individuals have suffered religious persecution of many forms. This struggle for religious freedom has been carried on by members of every major religion and by small sects, striving to worship according to their deeply held beliefs and convictions. This category exists specifically to tell the story of people who have struggled for religious freedom in diverse places around the world and throughout history.

QUALIFYING SITES:

Any site, regardless of the specific religion, which is clearly identified with the struggle for religious freedom is welcome as a waymark.

1). Statues, plaques, monuments, memorials, tombs, or other representations of individuals, or groups of people, who have been persecuted or martyred for their religious beliefs or practices.

2). Statues, plaques, monuments, memorials, tombs, or other representations of individuals, who have made a significant and historically recognized contribution to the cause of religious freedom in some way.

3). Buildings, identifiable geographic features, or other physical sites clearly associated with a particular event significant to the struggle for religious freedom, and clearly identified as such.

Buildings, such as churches, or other sites that are merely named for a religious martyr or other person qualifying under the foregoing criteria do NOT qualify unless there is some additional specific memorial to that person's status as significant to the cause of religious freedom.

NOTE: Any of the above must be clearly and specifically identified as related to religious freedom per se. If the site relates to an individual, there must be a definite reference at the site or on the memorial to his/her contribution to the cause of religious freedom. The same qualification applies to other sites.

Since religion is often closely associated with ethnicity, nationality, or political affiliation, it is essential to distinguish among these. Most cases of genocide, for instance, are based more on ethnic, tribal, social or political association rather than religious factors alone, although members of that group may be predominantly affiliated with a particular religion. The best known example is the brutal campaign of extermination carried out against the Jews by Hitler and the Nazi Party. All Jews, regardless of their religious views, including those who were totally secular or who may even have converted to Christianity, were targeted, as a member of an ethnic group rather than practitioners of a particular religion. Thus, memorials and sites for the holocaust (for which there is already a category in any case), would be excluded.

The struggle for religious freedom is also frequently concomitant with other independence movements or fights for civil rights. Religious leaders are often at the forefront of these causes. Well-known modern examples are Nelson Mandella and Martin Luther King, Jr. Although King was a Christian minister, and his involvement in the civil rights movement in the United States was largely informed by his religious faith, he fell to an assassin's bullet, not primarily as a religious martyr but as a civil rights activist. In some places around the world, religious freedom is still not recognized as a civil right. Thus, memorials and sites for these individuals, as examples, would be excluded.

So, there is an element of interpretation, in some cases, pertaining to the qualification of any particular site as to its relevance to religious freedom. We will strive to be more inclusive than exclusive, however. If in serious doubt, please contact the group leader or one of the officers for an opinion in order to avoid disappointment.

EXAMPLES

Mary Dyer who was executed on the Boston Common for professing her faith as a Quaker
The First Christian Martyrs in Korea - Yun Chi-chung and Kwon Sang-yon

Instructions for Posting a Religious Freedom Waymark:

1). COORDINATES obtained by a personal visit to the site. For buildings, coordinates at the main entrance, for other locations as close to the object as possible.

2). PHOTOS: A minimum of TWO photos are required, more depending on the site. One must be an overview of the site, and the other a close-up showing some significant feature of the site.

In ADDITION, if there are plaques or signs at the site, clear close-ups of these MUST be included, unless physically impossible.

All photos must be the original work of the author of the waymark. If there are cases where it may be desirable to use other graphic images, they may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

3). NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION: The quick description should be a few sentences giving an overview of the site and its significance. Remember that this is what appears on the front page of the waymark, so it should be informative.

The long description is the most important part of waymarks in this category. There is a story to tell, so this space is for you to tell the story behind the person or place being commemorated. Be careful to highlight the specific relation of the person or place to the struggle for religious freedom which is the focus of this category, and therefore the focus of each individual waymark. If you are cross-posting from another category, please make sure that the description for THIS waymark highlights the features which are the focus here.

If there are associated signs, plaques or inscriptions associated with the site, the FULL TEXT of these MUST be entered into the long description. If the text is unusually long or contains long lists or content not directly relevant, then exceptions may be made.

There is a strong preference for personally authored descriptions, but when it is necessary or preferable to quote material, it must be CLEARLY identified as quoted text and the author and SOURCE must be appropriately cited, including a URL if from a web site.

If it appears a good faith attempt has not been made to research the waymark, or obtain good photos, the waymark may be declined with a request for further information. If there are unusual circumstances, please explain them in the private message box so that the reviewer may give due consideration.

SPECIAL NOTE: While the details outlined in our category description, and the requirements listed in the posting instructions, cover the MINIMUM elements and standards for all waymarks in this category, each waymark will also be evaluated by a volunteer reviewer for overall quality and appropriateness. If a reviewer deems that there are deficiencies in some aspect of the waymark, the waymark may be either declined or accepted with request for changes and/or additions in either content or format.

Each waymark will be evaluated on its own merits. We will endeavor to be reasonable and flexible while maintaining the quality standards for the category. If there is a disagreement, try to work it out with the evaluating officer, or appeal to the group leader, but we reserve the right to accept or decline a waymark based on our best judgement.

LANGUAGE NOTE: We recognize waymarking as a global hobby and welcome waymarks from all countries. Because of our international scope, we also acknowledge ENGLISH as our lingua franca. English will create the highest level of accessibility globally. All waymarks must have at least a short description in ENGLISH. We encourage bilingual and multilingual waymarks, but one of the languages must be English. We have volunteer translators to help.

Relying on software or internet based translators, such as Babylon and Google Translate, may NOT yield accurate translations that are intelligible. Use these only when there is no alternative. Although we do not expect grammatical perfection, a waymark may be declined if there the English language is not understandable.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
Please give the date and a brief account of your visit including any relevant observations and experiences. New photos are highly encouraged to show additional features or views, but not mandatory. Add any new information that you may have from your personal experience or research.
