World Heritage SitesGrand Canyon, Arizona

in World Heritage Sites

Carved out by the Colorado river, the Grand Canyon (nearly 5,000 ft deep) is the most spectacular gorge in the world. Located in the state of Arizona, it cuts across the Grand Canyon National Park. Its horizontal strata retrace the geological history of the past 2 billion years. There are also prehistoric traces of human adaptation to a particularly harsh environment.

This island in the Pacific Ocean has been designated a World Heritage Site. It is one the few places in the world with its ecology virtually unaltered by man which permits the study of the dynamics of insular evolution and natural selection. Henderson is particularly notable for ten plants and four land birds, endemic to the island.

Tarxien Temples - These are certainly the most beautifully decorated and the largest temples. It is, in fact, a temple complex. These beautiful temples lie in the village of Tarxien not far from the Hypogeum. These temples may be considered as the cathedral of megalithic culture in Europe. The perfect architectural discipline of especially the middle temple of Tarxien surpasses in beauty and perfection all the other megalithic temples of the Maltese islands.

in World Heritage Sites

The Hypogeum is a labyrinthine complex of man-made chambers hewn out of the limestone extending some 11 metres below ground. It appears to have been used both as a burial site and as a temple. Neolithic man carved out the Hypogeum using only antlers and stone picks as tools, and in semi darkness. The Hypogeum is made up of three superimposed levels. The upper level resembles the earlier rock-cut tombs found elsewhere on the Islands. The middle level, hewn out during the temple period (3800 - 250

World Heritage SitesHistoric Centre of the City of Salzburg

in World Heritage Sites

Salzburg has managed to preserve an extraordinarily rich urban fabric, developed over the period from the Middle Ages to the 19th century when it was a city-state ruled by a prince-archbishop. Its Flamboyant Gothic art attracted many craftsmen and artists before the city became even better known through the work of the Italian architects Vincenzo Scamozzi and Santini Solari, to whom the centre of Salzburg owes much of its Baroque appearance.
