Description:
Public funiculars (fu·NIC·u·lar) are also known as incline elevators, lifts or railways. Regardless of the name, they transport the general public up and down a steep hillside in a railcar or cabin on a track by means of a cable. A fee is usually assessed for this service.
Expanded Description:

Typically, two cars start at opposite ends of a hillside and are attached to a cable the exact length of just one track. The two cars then pass each other at the mid-point of the track. The two cars also counterbalance each other, and draw motive power from an engine in the station house at the top of the hill. Single-track or single-car funiculars can be found, too.

The seating in the cars are sometimes stair-stepped to match the angle of incline of the hill, making each funicular unique.

A partial list of public funiculars can be found through this wikipedia link: List of Public Funiculars. Note that some funiculars on this list are defunct and not operating. They will not be accepted in this category.

What public funiculars are not:
· Funiculars on private property for the owners’ own use (even if it is in public view).
· Aerial lifts (which are suspended from cables)
· Cable cars, like those found in San Francisco
· Ski lifts (please use the Ski Lodge Category instead)
· Cog-wheeled railroads (please use the Scenic Railroad Category instead)
Instructions for Posting a Public Funiculars and Incline Railways Waymark:

(4) List any current fees and hours of operation. Please include months of operation if open seasonally.

(5) An original photo of the funicular must accompany the listing.
If you wish to list a website which is independent of the funicular's operator, please do so in the log. Please list the Official Website in the space provided.

NOTE: Extraneous elements, such as counters, banners, widgets or other personal embellishments and hyperlinks that do not enhance the waymark directly, will be NOT accepted and will result in the waymark being declined.
