Description:: Find a vintage ad that has a location/address that is verifiable. Vintage ads should be over 40 years old. Find the location and detail what is happening there today.

Oregon Business Directory & State Gazetteer 1873

The ads above and below; were found in an online resource but newspaper archives and the reference section at a public library would be a great resource for ads of this nature. Old phone books, magazines, yearbooks and microfilm archives are also good ways to find a vintage ad.

A lot of old advertising for widely distributed products didn't necessarily have any address or landmark at all, sometimes just some promotional text and the name of the product. Locations for these types of product ads will be accepted as long as the documentation supporting a location associated with the product is adequate.

Instructions for Posting a Vintage Ad Locations Waymark:

1) Find a vintage ad (ads over 40 years old). Sources may be online, newspaper archives, phone books in the reference section at the library, etc. The ad must be uploaded into the waymark gallery and used as the default photo for the waymark.

2) Personally visit the location identified in the vintage ad. Collect coordinates and photos at the location and identify what is there now.

3) Properly name the waymark. The waymark name should be the name of the business in the vintage ad, the name of the city/state, and the date of publication.
Example: For the first ad above the waymark name would be J. McCracken and Co, Importers - Portland Oregon - 1873

Note: I didn't use the ampersand (&) in the title since the symbol breaks the search feature if it is used in a waymark name.

4) Post an original photo of the location. In other words take a photo yourself. Photos that have been gathered from an internet source will result in a declined waymark.

5) Fill out the variables to the best of your ability. If a Google search finds easily obtained additional information the waymark may be denied with a request for an update.

6) Accurately describe location as found today. If you quote a web page or secondary source please provide credit to the source of your information. Waymarks that leave the long description blank will be declined.

7) Provide proof of location if needed The vintage ad must show the name/address of the location being waymarked

Example 1:
The vintage ad location above is in Seattle Washington. It is from a publication printed in 1911 entitled Oregon Number. The location is identified as across from the Savoy Hotel. It is waymarkable as is, as its own proof. However if the address or city were missing from the ad it would need additional proof such as this article from 1986 which describes the demolition of the Savoy Hotel and gives its location as 1214 Second Ave. With this "proof" the ad would be waymarkable even if it didn't give a specific city in the ad.

Example 2:
If you found a 1920's advertisement for Wesson Oil in a vintage magazine but it doesn't list a location This Wikipedia link would make the former location of the Savannah Georgia Factory that was destroyed in 2004 waymarkable.
