Expanded Description:

Education is revered around the world, and institutions of higher learning have a long and venerable history. Many of them are sponsored by public governmental agencies -- countries, states, and communities; others are privately owned; some are affiliated with religious institutions; some are established by individuals.

Terminology for these schools varies from country to country. In some places the term "college" may be applied to secondary schools. The term "academy" also has different usages around the world. The important requirement is that the school be above the normal secondary level of education.

This includes junior colleges and other two-year schools, four-year universities of all types, and other kinds of schools that might be regarded as institutions of higher learning.

Non-traditional educational institution, technical schools, vocational schools, business schools, etc. are also to be included, as long as they are post-secondary schools.

In the case of graduate schools, they may independent or part of a larger university system, and may waymarked as long as they have an independent identity. Also, multiple, distinct campus locations of a larger university (such as U.S. state universities) are each eligible for a separate waymark.

Instructions for Posting a Universities and Colleges Waymark:

TITLE: The name of the school and its location (city state/province or equivalent/ and/or country) must be part of the title. Use the following as the format:

Great University -- Hometown, State/Country
Great University, Second Campus -- Hometown,
State/Country

1. Coordinates obtained from your personal GPS readings.

Obviously some schools have large campuses. The primary waymark coordinates should be taken at a major entrance to the campus if possible. Alternatively, they could be taken at some central point on the campus. Just indicate such in your description so visitors know where to go.

2. At least TWO original photographs -- a view from your waymark coordinates showing a view of part of the campus including a building, and a photo showing the name of the school, which could be an entrance sign or other campus location. Other photos of buildings or campus landmarks are highly encouraged to give us a full idea of your college or university!

3. Narrative description -- Include as much information as you would like to share about this school. Some things of interest would be the type of school, its history, its location and campus, and its size.

4. Variables -- The intent is NOT to provide a detailed school directory, so the required variables are kept to a minimum. Feel free to provide any additional information in the long description section. If the choices in the variable section don't fit your waymark, please suggest additions/changes which can be made as we go along.

NOTE:It is assumed that a reasonable attempt will be made to supply the variables, and they should be left blank only when the information does not apply or is not available.

SPECIAL NOTE: While the details outlined in our category description, and the requirements listed in the posting instructions, cover the MINIMUM elements and standards for all waymarks in this category, each waymark will also be evaluated by a volunteer reviewer for overall quality and appropriateness. If a reviewer deems that there are deficiencies in some aspect of the waymark, the waymark may be either declined or accepted with request for changes and/or additions in either content or format.

Each waymark will be evaluated on its own merits. We will endeavor to be reasonable and flexible while maintaining the quality standards for the category. If there is a disagreement, try to work it out with the evaluating officer, or appeal to the group leader, but we reserve the right to accept or decline a waymark based on our best judgement.

LANGUAGE NOTE: We recognize waymarking as a global hobby and welcome waymarks from all countries. Because of our international scope, we also acknowledge ENGLISH as our lingua franca. English will create the highest level of accessibility globally. All waymarks must have at least a short description in ENGLISH. We encourage bilingual and multilingual waymarks, but one of the languages must be English. We have volunteer translators to help.

Relying on software or internet based translators, such as Babylon and Google Translate, may NOT yield accurate translations that are intelligible. Use these only when there is no alternative. Although we do not expect grammatical perfection, a waymark may be declined if there the English language is not understandable.
