Carriages and Coaches on Permanent Display
Managed By: Icon Here the Coachmen
Description:
Horse-drawn vehicles were the most important means of land transport for centuries. Many of them have survived the era of motorization and were put on display. We are looking for places where carriages or coaches are on permanent display.

Please take a look at the Expanded Description for further details.
Expanded Description:

A hansom cab on display in the Mossman Collection, Luton, England

Animal-drawn vehicles were invented over 5,000 years ago. They were in use in many cultures all over the world until they were eventually replaced by motorized vehicles in the 20th century. This category is looking for places where these witnesses of technical history are put on permanent display.

There are many different types of wagons. Whether they are called a carriage, coach, cart, chariot, wagon etc., they are all welcome here as long as they fit the definition below:

This category is looking for all types of animal-drawn[1] vehicles, for transport of goods and people[2], on wheels or runners[3], that were put on permanent display[4].

Stagecoach in Switzerland

  • [1] The type of working animal is not important -- it can be horses, oxen, mules, camels, dogs -- but NO human-drawn vehicles nor wagons drawn by motorized vehicles.
  • [2] Other animal-powered machinery like plows or mowers do not qualify. There is a category for Old Agricultural Equipment where they are accepted.
  • [3] Please, no submissions for vehicles on rail tracks or animal-drawn boats.
  • [4] Also, please don't submit waymarks of active, non-permanent vehicles.

Finally, there is a specific category for Covered Wagons. Submissions that qualify for that category are also excluded here.

Only one waymark per location is allowed. If there are several vehicles at the same location (like a hall in a transport museum), only create one single waymark for the collection. Objects distributed over large sites, e.g. museum villages or separate buildings, are not considered to be in the same location.

Instructions for Posting a Carriages and Coaches on Permanent Display Waymark:
Identify the location of a static carriage and record its location as close as it is accessible for the public. For indoor displays, please take your location coordinates from outside the main entrance.

Please provide as much information as you can get in the long description. Some of the questions you could answer are: When was it used? Who built it? Did it have any remarkable owners? Does it have any uncommon features? When and why was it put on display? Some locations will not provide as much information as others, but at least try to create an interesting and informative waymark.

If there are any markers on site, please include a picture; it would also be great to have its text in the long description.

When you use original text from a source for your description (e.g. Wikipedia), please cite your source(s) and mark the citation in an evident way -- give credit where credit is due.

Naming Conventions: The name of the waymark MUST follow this format: Name of Site - City, State/Country. If it is not within a city or town, then please use another regional designation - whatever best identifies the location of the site.

Please post at least two original photos. Additional photos are greatly appreciated and will enhance the quality of your waymark.

LANGUAGE NOTE: We recognize waymarking as a global hobby and welcome waymarks from all countries. Because of our international scope, we also acknowledge ENGLISH as our lingua franca. English will create the highest level of accessibility globally. All waymarks must have at least a short description in ENGLISH. We encourage bilingual and multilingual waymarks, but one of the languages must be English.
