The Poffenberger farm & this house were major players during the Battle of Antietam. Union troops bivouacked there the night before the battle & again the next day to treat the wounded. According to the NPS, the log farmhouse was built circa 1770.

This house is the only intact remaining structure on the property which existed during the battle of Antietam. It served as a field hospital for both sides. This log house was first built in 1790. As of Aug of 2011, the house was under renovated.
