Long Description:
The Church of the Annunciation -- also known as "Annunciation Catholic Church" or simply "Annunciation Church" -- is the second oldest Catholic Church in Houston, Texas and one of the few remaining that still provide mass in both English and Latin. It is an outgrowth of the original St. Vincent’s Catholic Church which was established in 1839.

A small monument to the Ten Commandments lies on the Church's north lawn. It is a polished marble slab with a double curved top, to represent the two stone tablets Moses received on Mount Sinai. The marble slab rests on a white granite pedestal that also includes a few related verses from the Bible.

Note that the Roman Catholic's version of the Ten Commandments differs from several other Christian denominations, in that the so-called "Idolatry" clause (a.k.a. the "2nd Commandment" in other denominations) is considered redundant and inherent in the 1st Commandment. Likewise, the 9th and 10th Commandments are often combined as one clause in other Christian denominations.

The left tablet reads:

I. I AM THE LORD YOUR GOD, WHO BROUGHT YOU OUT OF THE LAND OF EGYPT, THAT PLACE OF SLAVERY. YOU SHALL HAVE NO OTHER GODS BESIDES ME.

II. YOU SHALL NOT TAKE THE NAME OF THE LORD IN VAIN; FOR THE LORD WILL NOT HOLD HIM GUILTLESS WHO TAKES HIS NAME IN VAIN.

III. REMEMBER TO KEEP HOLY THE SABBATH DAY. SIX DAYS YOU SHALL LABOR AND DO ALL YOUR WORK: BUT THE SEVENTH DAY IS A SABBATH OF THE LORD YOUR GOD.

The right tablet reads:

IV. HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER: THAT YOUR DAYS MAY BE LONG IN THE LAND WHICH THE LORD YOUR GOD GIVES YOU.

V. YOU SHALL NOT KILL.

VI. YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY.

VII. YOU SHALL NOT STEAL.

VIII. YOU SHALL NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS AGAINST YOUR NEIGHBOR.

IX. YOU SHALL NOT COVET YOUR NEIGHBOR'S WIFE.

X. YOU SHALL NOT COVET YOUR NEIGHBOR'S GOODS.

The bottom pedestal reads:

YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND. AND THE SECOND IS LIKE THIS: YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.

MATTHEW 22:37-39
