Long Description:
Lewis and Clark purchased a Newfoundland dog in Pittsburg for $20.00 in 1803. The dog was named after a tributary of the Blackfoot River in Montana, which the explorers called “Seaman’s Creek” but due to the explorer’s poor penmanship the dogs name was misinterpreted for many years as “Scannon” (which explains why so many Newfoundland dogs were named “Scannon.)
Lewis and Clark journals reveal that they ate more than 200 dogs on their journey, and they nearly ate SEAMAN several times, but he was spared.
Lewis and Clark explored the area of Cascade Locks in 1804-1806 and referred to this area as the “The Cascades”, “Cascade Falls” or the “Lower Columbia Falls”.

The statue of SEAMAN and Sacagawea were commissioned in 2010, and unveiled April 13, 2011. They are located in the roundabout at Marine Park, adjacent the Visitors Center. The Port commissioned local artist Heather Söderberg of Söderberg Bronze Works Inc. to create two bronze sculptures.

The plaque reads:
"Seaman
A Loyal Companion
Meriwether Lewis' dog, Seaman, a large Newfoundland acquired in Pittsburgh for $20, traveled with Lewis and Clar's Corps of Discovery during 1803-1806. Seaman proved his worth as a companion, hunter, and guard dog, warding off buffalo and bears and once catching a dear in mid-river."
Breed: Newfoundland

Date Built: 4/13/2011
