Long Description:
The River Aire was made more navigable in the 1700s with construction of locks, lock cuts an artificially strengthening the river banks. This made the transport of goods much easier during the industrial revolution. This part of the river is known as the Aire & Calder Navigation.

Clarence dock was originally used to load and unload barges, and had a number of warehouses alongside it. With the development of motor transport and motorways, the area became redundant and derelict.

In the late 90’s and early 2000s the area has been redeveloped with offices, apartments, shops, restaurants and the Royal Armouries Museum. Clarence dock now forms a basin for leisure craft to moor next to the Royal Armouries.

This lock allows the river to be closed off from the dock in times of high water, but normally the lock gates are left open.

I don't know the difference in elevation between Leeds and Wakefield.
