Long Description:
The Roanoke Canal opened to shipping in 1823 - its purpose was to enable shipping traffic the opportunity to avoid the 'great falls' in this area of the Roanoke River. The river was a major route used to carry goods to & from the interior region along the NC/VA border region until 1880 when the railroads took over the transportation in this area.

This museum features exhibits relating to the building & operation of the Roanoke Canal, as well as information relating to the history of the Roanoke Rapids area. There are also interactive displays & a trail outside which follows the path of the canal. Visitors can also inspect the remains of an old lock - see the link below for more details on the canal & museum.
