Long Description:
One cannot travel down Penn Avenue or Butler Street without noticing it. Jutting out on one of the many triangular promontories that characterize Pittsburgh's crazy intersection angles, it commands attention. You can pass it every day, but you never fail to look at it.

"It" is the Lawrenceville Doughboy. And by making us always remember as we pass by, it performs its task of "memorializing" perhaps better than any other of its genre that I have ever seen.

Please read the linked article below, from the Lawrenceville Historical Society's website. Learn how the community raised the money to pay sculptor Allen Newman from New York to create the statue. Read about how 20,000 people turned out for the dedication ceremony in 1921. Learn how the community -- not the government -- has kept the memorial in good repair.

I could think of no better place to visit on Veteran's Day weekend.
