Long Description:
This statue features a mixed-breed horse, decked out in Spanish tack and ridden by a horseman that is adorned with Spanish attire. The rider is carrying a rifle.

The horse appears to be of sturdy stock, bred for long days of hard riding, probably not overly quick, but certainly able to work a long day and deliver the rider safely to his destination. (Eventually.)

Perhaps the rider is a Vaquero,a horseman and cattle herder, one of those who first came to California with the Jesuit priests, and later spread to other regions. These Vaqueros branched into 2 distinct styles of horsemanship. The California Vaqueros used Spanish tack (including special equipment such as braided hackamores and bits made with a "spade" which influenced the horses movement) a gentle method of bonding with their equine, combining animal philosophy with persuasion, and today known as "horse whisperers".

The Texas Vaqueros (like the one on this statue) took the California style and added the look and equipment of the Texas cowboy.
