Long Description:
M/Gen Emory Upton was born in Batavia in 1839. He served with the Union Army during the Civil War. He was commissioned as a Lt in the Artillery after graduating from West Point in 1861. By the fall of 1862 he was appointed Colonel of the 121st NY Regiment. For his actions during Gettysburg and later at Rappahannock Station he was promoted to Major in the Regular Army.

During the Battle of Spotsylvania he developed a successful method for attacking Confederate entrenchments, one that was instrumental during trench warfare in WWI. Upton was wounded during the attack. He was subsequently promoted to Brigadier General while in Washington DC recovering from his wounds.

At the Third Battle of Winchester he successfully led VI Corps, despite severe wounds received. For his actions, he was promoted Colonel in the Regular Army and Major General of Volunteers.

After the war he served in various capacities, finally as Commander of the 4th US Artillery at the Presidio in San Francisco, where he died in 1881.
