Long Description:
"At midday Thursday, May 10, 2007, fire erupted approximated 2.5 southeast of the Catalina airport. With everincreasing winds the fire became larger and large with every tick of the clock. Fire united manned by LA County were dispatched to to confront the looming fire but it had uncontrollably too fast for the units to handle. By 4pm,the fire had jumped the existing fire break and was headed directly for the city of Avalon. Avalon fire department units quickly responded to the city's boundaries to prepare for structural protection.

Listening over the Avalon fire radio, you could distinguish some of the many voices of the Avalon fire personnel communicating their crisp, concise, commands, that displayed confidence in their action, following an exhausting 24 hours battle. The fire was eventually stopped at the city limits, in the end approximately 3800 men, women and children had been evacuated from the island. The island fire consumed 4700 acres of vegetation, destroyed one residential structure and eight commercial properties.

Although many agencies responded to the fire, this plaque is dedicated to our firefighters, who at the time of uncertainty exhibited their bravery, expertise and sheer commitment by risking their lives to save the city that many of them grew up in, and make no mistake, no one group fought as hard and with dedication to duty did the Avalon fire department and its volunteer and it is because of this that the citizens of Avalon will forever in their debt.
