Long Description:
A pile of horseshoes 17 feet high and 19 feet 6 inches in circumference at the base.
It is the largest known stack of used horseshoes in the world.
The present pile of some 30,000 horseshoes was constructed between June 1945 and April 1965.
It was built by George Flinders who was the blacksmith for 31 years at Scarrington Forge.
It is estimated that the weight of the stack is 10 tons.
In 1973 the horseshoe pile was bought by the Nottinghamshire County Council when they heard that an American wanted to buy it and ship it to the USA.
Disintegration and the taking of souvenirs by treasure-hunters had caused the stack to lean severely at the top and weakened the bottom. So some remedial work was done in 1987-88 and in 2006 the stack was dismantled and re-built with new shoes and a steel girder added in the centre.
There is a rival stack in the next village at Aslockton. For a short period this pile at Aslockton Forge was taller until it collapsed in 2007.The Aslockton pile was re-built.
