Long Description:
In the summer of1862, Confederate General Braxton Bragg's army invaded Kentucky for supplies, recruits, and to pull Union troops away from East Tennessee. After maneuvering around Kentucky for more than a month, Union troops pushed the Confederates from Bardstown to Perryville.

After a skirmish the night of October 7, the Confederates planned to attack. They had no idea that their 16,000 soldiers faced more than 58,000 Union troops. On these ridges, 20,000 Northern soldiers were deployed. This would be the Southern attack.

Two PM October 8, Bragg's Confederates charged toward the Union lines. For five hours these troops clashed what was the largest battle to occur on Kentucky soil. The Union flanks were both pushed back, but reinforcements prevented a decisive Confederate victory. When it ended, more than 7,500 men from both sides were killed or wounded.
