Long Description:
In 1937 the Texas Division of the UDC erected a monument to Lt Dick Dowling, who defeated a massive fleet of Federal gunboats with a few dozen Confederate solders in 1863. Dowling's heroics ended the Federal threat to invade and occupy Texas for the rest of the war.

In 1937 the UDC erected their grey granite monument in the center of the intersection of SH 87 and Broadway Street in downtown Sabine Pass.

In the 1960s the monument was relocated a 1/2 block west to a safer spot in the SH 87 right of way.
