Long Description:

The Connecticut Electric Railway Association owns and operates the non-profit Connecticut Trolley Museum. On display is a wide variety of railroad cars, trolley cars, and equipment. One of the most unusual items on display is the three wheel inspection car.

A sign accompanying the exhibit explains the purpose, use and details of its construction. The sign reads:

THREE WHEEL INSPECTION CAR

This car was used to keep railroad tracks
intact and safe. Two men would leave to
inspect the rails for loose spikes, bent or
damaged rail. One man would pump the bar
while the other would take notes of any
damage and its location then report it to the
repair personnel. These velocipedes were
made of WHITE ASH and held together with
bolts. The wheels were made of iron. The
side shaft is removable as to make it easy to
change direction and allow other equipment
to pass. This car weighs about 140 pounds.

Manufactured by:
Sheffield Velocipede Car Company
Three Rivers, Mich.
