Long Description:
It's easy to visit this place. It's located downtown Lagos, a nice town in the south of Portugal, and once can even arrive by train and walk there from the station.

It has a quadrangular plant, and it was, by the time it was built (between 1680 and 1690) the top notch of military architecture. It was actually part of a more complex defensive system, but mostly the other spots, mainly artillery positions, don't exist anymore.

The ticket to get in varies, as there are often events inside. The provided value it's an estimated average.

From the sign placed near the fort:

"Military architecture from the 17th century. Situated at the entrance to the harbour of Ribeira de Bensafrim, the Fort of Nª Srª da Penha [this is the formal name, rarely used] was built between 1680 and 1690. It was used to defend the access to the quay and the southeastern and the eastern sections of the town walls, by cross-firing with the Porta da Vila bulwark and the Governor's castle bulwark.

In its time the fort was one of the most advanced in the Algarve. It stands out for its quadrangular plan and for being particularly low with very thick walls on the seafront, a good example of military architecture used for artillery warfare. The moat can be crossed by means of a drawbridge (rebuilt) leading to the only door. The cylindrical sentry boxes were added during the 20th century restoration works. Inside the small chapel of Santa Bárbara is completely covered in 17th century tiles."
