Long Description:
Trang ("Tr-UNG"), is one of the far southern provinces of Thailand, ~800kms south of the busy metropolis of Bangkok. The capital (and only) city of the province, also named Trang, has no more than 50,000 people and could be described as charmingly rustic. The main industries of the province involve rubber plantations and tourism. Tourists head not to the city, but to the beaches and islands in or near Trang province.

Near the centre of this fine town is a large, well designed, multi-cultural, multi-level, and rather pretty fountain. It takes as its major theme—dugongs. These aquatic mammals are important in the province, a protected species and a tourist sight (see sign in gallery), and the images of dugongs are frequently to be found around the town.

The fountain is ~5m plus high, a distinctive white in colour, and it on a major traffic intersection, not too far from the provincial hall.

The lower level of the fountain consists of happily frolicking dugongs. The next level up, to my unskilled eye, consists of European style horses looking bold and adventurous, next mermaids, and at top, a return to eastern culture, Thai/Hindu angels. The one atop is a rather attractive, bare breasted, female angel. It is good to see that some cultures are not shy at presenting the innate beauty of the human form.
