Long Description:
On the night of December 12, 1942 the Port Pilot boat “Carraig an Cuan” was trying to place a port pilot aboard the “Irish Poplar” and the Port Examination launch 3 had to get an Examination Officer on board to check for contraband. In the 50 mph winds each of the launches got sucked to the stern of the ship and capsized. In spite of the gallant efforts of Ballycotton Lifeboat crew and others five men drown. Miraculously, one man survived by swimming to Spike Island, guided by the flashing light of the Spit Bank lighthouse.

The memorial is in the form of a small replica of the Spit Bank lighthouse and a memorial stone. The stone is inscribed:

On The 50th Anniversary Of
The Cork Harbour Tragedy Of
12th December 1942 We Commemorate
The Following Who Lost Their Lives
John Higgins C.H.C.  Patrick Wilshaw N.S.
Frank Powell N.S.  William Duggan N.S.
Frank Lloyd N.S.

May They Rest In Peace

Since I was at the memorial in early October 2010 it has been refurbished and additional plaques have been added which were unveiled 11 December 2010.
