Long Description:
The Tioga River has been the a project of many people since it has suffered greatly due to Acid Mine Drainage from local coal mines. This gauging station is crucial to providing information on water quality in this watershed. Groups of volunteers have place limestone diversion wells at points along most of the tributaries to the Tioga River nuetrelizing much of the acid, but still there is much work to be done. The gauging station measures flow and discharge like many others but for this scenario pH, conductivity, and a few metals like iron and sulphur are also measured. The readings can show if the limestone systems are in working order, and show the progress as work is being done. These readings are also important to the US Army Corps of Engineers who run the dam downstream at Tioga-Hammond Lakes. Water is mixed between the two bodies of water to dilute the mine pollution. Times of little rain result in higher concentrations of acid, and lots of rain will help dilute the acid. Take a look around, the Tioga River has many colors. If your wondering why, it is the iron, and sulphur deposits on the bedrock that has been disolved from the mines.
