Long Description:
At 110 meters, West Hawk Lake is the deepest lake in Manitoba. It's more than 3 times deeper than any other lake in the area. Although estimates vary greater, best guess is that about 100 million years ago, there was a meteor impact that created this crater.
The crater's diameter is 2.4 km (twice the size of the Barringer Crater in Arizona) but the lake is larger - 3.6 km. The rim of the crater has eroded over the last million years allowing the lake to enlarge, but you can still see remnants of the rim - the islands in the lake.
The circular shape of the lake is what prompted scientists to investigate it as a possible crater in the 1960s.
