Civil War Discovery Trail SitesBattle of Marion

in Civil War Discovery Trail Sites

It was a peaceful town that had for the most part been spared the ravages of the fighting upon its soil. But as in the case of all the south, Marion had suffered with the loss of her sons, had felt the division of families as they sadly chose to follow their conscience. The city had also contributed to the cause. But the mountains and geographic location had afforded them some protection for the ravages of war. That is, until the winter of 1864.

The St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery marker is one of several in the Wytheville area relating to the railroad and salt works raid undertaken by Union Col. John T. Toland in July 1863. On July 21, Toland and several of his men were killed in fighting in Wytheville. Supposedly Toland and another dead officer were buried in the Catholic cemetery, while the remaining Federal soldiers were buried at St. John's.
