Woodmen of the World Grave Markers/Monuments
Managed By: Icon Here Woodmen of the World
Description:
Many of these tree stump " monuments stand 4 to 5 feet high and show sawed or broken limbs traditionally symbolizing a life cut short. With this category we are trying to locate these special memorials left behind across the country. Please limit submissions to 4 markers per person in each cemetery, meaning multiple Waymarkers can each find 4 markers in the same cemetery. In addition we will also allow historical markers placed by Woodmen of the World, even those that are not cemetery markers.
Expanded Description:

The following Info can be found at: (visit link)

Woodmen of the World is a Fraternal Organization based in Omaha, Nebraska. It was founded in 1890 by Joseph Cullen Root who at the time was a member of the Freemasons and several other fraternal organizations. He began the Woodmen of the World after hearing a sermon about pioneer woodmen clearing the forest for their families. This Organization is committed to helping families who are seeking financial security and insurance protection. By doing this the organization is working to take care of families like their own in communities across the country.

The most well known physical legacies of this organization are the distinctive headstones erected in the shape of a tree stump. Many of these headstones can still be found in cemeteries across the nation. Unfortunately this program was abandoned in the 1920s for being too expensive.

In 1891 the Auxiliary of the Woodmen of the World was established. It was first known as the Mystic Circle but the name was soon changed to Woodmen Circle. Later this name was changed to Women of Woodcraft and then still later in 1917 changed to Neighbors of Woodcraft. This was the former female auxiliary of the Woodmen of the World. It was eventually combined in 1965 by the Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Company.

Instructions for Posting a Woodmen of the World Grave Markers/Monuments Waymark:
Our requirements are that it be Woodmen of the World, Women of the Woodcraft, the Supreme Forest Woodmen Circle, Woodmen Circle. Modern Woodmen of America is not affiliated with Woodmen of the World, therefore will not be accepted. Any MWA submissions that have already been approved will "stand", they are being grandfathered in. No new MWAs will be accepted. We must be able to clearly see the emblem or wording indicating one of these Organizations. We have recently changed the required pictures from 2 to 1 as long as the monument with emblem and/or wording can be clearly read.

Please take at least one picture that clearly indicates that this is the final resting place of a Woodsman of the World or one of the other group names it has gone by over the years. In your title please show the person's name, Cemetery name, city and state.

Be sure to get a good picture of that inscription. Extra pictures are always welcome.

Not all tree stump monuments are for Woodmen of the World members. In the late 19th century the majority of tree monuments were this very popular rustic style of decoration.

As always we ask all visitors to these sights to remember those residing here and be respectful.

Birth/Death Dates on the Monument ( Optional )
