Drawing Waymarks
Managed By: Icon Here Starving Artists
Description:
How did waymarkers waymark in the Middle Ages? They sketched on parchment after marking coordinates with their... olde handheldth GPS receivers... Okay, you got me. Waymarking isn't that old. This is a game that has waymarkers drawing locations instead of taking photographs of them. (note: be sure to read the expanded description for requirements and restrictions)
Expanded Description:
This is a Waymarking Game that involves rendering a hand-drawn image of the location being waymarked. Any location can be waymarked and waymarkers, both posters and visitors, are encouraged to use a medium that they are individually comfortable using.

The styles of art are limitless. The University of Southern California has a webpage that defines some known art styles. Waymarkers are in no way limited to this list, it's merely a way to gain inspiration.

Your choice of medium and style for your hand-drawn image is wide open. Make sure your finished product can be scanned into a digital image file for upload or, if nothing else, be photographed with your digital camera. If you have to take a picture of your hand-drawing, crop the image so only the drawing is presented.

Hand-drawn images in the mediums of digital artwork, such as pixel art, or using programs that allow types of hand-drawing, like MS Paint or a suitable iPhone application, will also be accepted. The focus is on your hands and creativity doing the work to visually represent the location in the waymark.

No photographic images of the location itself should be uploaded to the gallery.

Avoid drawing just a sign or any solitary object. Include the surrounding area in your picture.

If you're drawing an existing waymark that was posted by you or another waymarker, make sure your coordinates are marked from the spot where you drew the waymark and that your drawing is an original piece done at the location. Please review the posting requirements for the rules of this game.

Relax. Nobody needs to be Monet. Have fun.
Instructions for Posting a Drawing Waymarks Waymark:
Get to the spot where you're going to make the sketch. Mark the coordinates using a handheld GPS receiver. Make your sketch while looking at the subject. On the corner of your sketch or in the Long Description, make note of the current date, time, and the direction you were facing when sketching.

Your choice of medium for your hand-drawn image is wide open. You just can not use a photograph. It is your discretion whether you include yourself and/or your GPSr in the picture. Avoid drawing just a sign or any solitary object. Include the surrounding area in your picture. Remember to start with a blank "canvas", so the entire piece is done by you (uploading previously published art by someone else is not what we have in mind here!).

No photographic images of the location itself should be uploaded to the gallery. Importing a photo into a software package such as, but not limited to Photoshop, and then producing what looks like a drawing is NOT in line with the spirit of this category. Note that creating an original digital image in software is fine, so the medium of "photoshop" is allowed. Just not by starting with a photograph and editing that image to appear to be hand-drawn.

In your Long Description, provide some interesting information about the location so waymarkers will want to visit the location and draw it, too.

Posters can use the Long Description, the optional Variables, or both to provide information about their choice of medium and viewing location.

The value of the site is dependent on the poster by choosing it as a waymark and on the visitor by choosing to visit the waymark. Use discretion and keep the game fun and without restrictions!

Please try not to use any special characters in your waymark names, just letters, numbers, commas, and dashes. This makes it easier to load waypoints into software.
Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
Visit the coordinates given for the location. Create a hand-drawn artwork of the location from the same viewing location or a different location. If you choose to draw from a different perspective, note your coordinates in your visit log. Also include information about which medium you selected and any interesting information you may have about the location that wasn't included in the Long Description.
Category Settings:
  • Waymarks can be added to this category
  • New waymarks of this category are reviewed by the category group prior to being published
  • Category is visible in the directory
Variables:
  • Waymark Poster's choice of medium
  • Seating options
  • Waymark link (optional)
