Old Spanish Trail Auto Route
Description:
This category seeks to waymark the unique pieces of Americana and history that still lie along the Old Spanish Trail Auto Route. It connects the old Spanish colonial towns of St. Augustine, Florida, on the U.S. Atlantic coast and San Diego, California, on the U.S. Pacific Coast. The Old Spanish Trail Auto Route is not to be confused with the 19th century cattle trail of the same name that wound from Santa Fe to Los Angeles.
Expanded Description:
The Old Spanish Trail Auto Route (OST) once spanned 3,000 miles of roadway from the Atlantic Ocean to Pacific Ocean crossing 67 counties and 8 states along the southern border of the United States. Work on the auto highway began in 1915 and, by the 1920s, the trail linked St. Augustine, Florida, to San Diego, California, with its center and headquarters in San Antonio, Texas. The cities in between boasted a shared heritage of Spanish missions, forts, and Spanish colonization. The lure of the OST continued to captivate travelers until the early 1960s, when new interstates redirected traffic off the old road.

The OST highway passes through some of America's best tourist destinations including St. Augustine, Jacksonville, Mobile, New Orleans, San Antonio, Tombstone, Tucson, and San Diego. The OST largely follows what later became U.S. Highway 90 in the east and U.S. 80 in the west. Indeed, the road continued on as the Old Spanish Trail even after the U.S. numbered highways were created, with later OST maps including the U.S. highway shields. For a list of counties and cities along the OST, visit the OST100 website.

For segment by segment descriptions of how to locate the route of the Old Spanish Trail today (see links to segments below), please visit the Old Spanish Trail Association Archives, Louis J. Blume Library, St. Mary's University, San Antonio, Texas. This website provides the following overview of the OST:

"Welcome to a trip in space and time on a highway that is now four highways: the OST, Old U.S.-90, U.S.-90, and IH-10. The original highway continues to exist in many locations but in others has either been paved over to make way for the subsequent roads or has dead-ended into rubbish heaps and grassy mounds. But for many, many hundreds of miles, the original highway (sometimes expanded) remains the Main Street of the coastal South from Saint Augustine, Florida, to San Diego, California. Sometimes it's called Main Street, other times its Cervantes or Broadway or Claiborne, but wherever you drive on it, you bump into people who continue to refer to it as the Old Spanish Trail. Let's start at the beginning, the far eastern section of the trail. It was not the first place construction started but is the easternmost terminus of the highway."
