Rails to Trails

Description:
This category is for marking the trailheads and access points of old rail beds that have been converted to recreational trails.
Expanded Description:
Rail Trails are recreational trails that were once used for railroad right of ways. The tracks have been removed and the rail bed is now be used to walk/hike, bike, crosscountry skiing, rollerblade if paved, some even allows pets, horseback riding and camping. Also many of these trails have others waymarks and geocaches along them. Rail trails are in most every state of the United States along with many other counties.

The goal of this category is to waymark as many trail heads and access points to these rail trails as possible. This means that each rail trail should have at least two waymarks and some will have many. This will help others who would like to use these rail trails.

For more information please go to http://www.railstotrails.org/.

For this category
Trail Heads will be defined as a place were a vehicle can be parked nearby for an extended period of time and there is at least one sign about the Rail Trail. These are usually at the beginning and end of the trail.
Access Points Will be defined as a place were there is easy public access to the trail. An example would be were a trail intersects with a road. A sign that tells about the rail trail and/or place to park a vehicle nearby for an short period of time would be nice but not required.

Instructions for Posting a Rails to Trails Waymark:
1. Must provide accurate coordinates.

2. Two Photos: For Trail Heads you are strongly encouraged upload a photo of the Sign that describes the rail trail. This photo should be clear enough to read the text of the marker. The second photo of the rail trail near the sign. Also a picture of you with the sign or on the trail would be nice, but is not required.

3. The photo of the rail trail you are submitting must be included on the waymark page in addition to being uploaded to the gallery if you are submitting it for the trail head. If you do not know how to place a photo on the page. Members of the category management team will help you with the process. Photos of access points would be nice but are not required.

4. In the "long description" field, please include a brief description of the purpose for the rail trail. You can copy the text from the sign, or summarize it, or use your own words.

6. The text of a sign usually only hints at the depth of the history behind it. Do a web search and link to additional information, if it is available, using the optional field provided.

7. After you've done all this work go ahead and log it. You've earned it!
